Dinosaurs & Pratt: A Winning Combination | Review of ‘Jurassic World’

By: Cynthia Ayala

Jurassic World starring Chris Pratt Universal Studios

Off the coast of Costa Rica lies the luxury resort Jurassic World, where arrays of genetically engineered dinosaurs reign in exhibits for the consumers’ entertainment. Now, the newest addition, the Indominus Rex, has escaped, setting off a chain reaction where dinosaurs escape and wreak havoc on the island. Now Owen, the former military man and animal expert must save the island and terminate the Indominus Rex.

Bigger doesn’t always mean better, but in this case it certainly made for one heck of a good film. This movie did not reboot the franchise but it was able to breathe life back into something that was almost forgotten, or rather tarnished by Jurassic Park’s 2 & 3. And while Jurassic Park 3 was better than 2, it still had nothing on the first film.

Jurassic World does. There is no doubt that Jurassic Park will always be better. The story was fresh, unique and took viewers on an adventure like nothing before. Nevertheless, Jurassic World is still unique and certainly a nail-biter of a film. But the element of the film that really held it together and made it work was Chris Pratt who played the former military man and Raptor trainer Owen. His character was, by far, the smartest character in the film who had a healthy respect, fear and understanding of the dinosaurs around him. He’s the man who has to find the kids that have gone missing.

Pratt is just an amazing actor. He is able to fit into various roles and make them his own. He brings the comedy but he also brings the seriousness needed to make this film a respectable film. His performance, those shots holding down the fort and bringing everything in line, his ability to interact with vicious dinosaurs was amazing.

While he the element that deserves the most recognition, the rest of the cast was equally great. They all fit together perfectly, having the perfect chemistry with one another. You can’t have a good movie without a good cast that fits together perfectly and has such good chemistry with one another because they all have to work together and work off each other to bring their characters, their relationships to life. End of story, and this movie had all of that.

Additionally, while you need a good cast, you also need a good story. Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver have so far, been a spectacular team. These pair of writers understand what they are writing and how to make the audience feel for the characters and the dinosaurs. The audience feels for the T-Rex and the Raptors, these very dangerous and very fictional characters. And while there is some sexism in the film, it’s very minimal and audience members need to remember that Clair (played by Bryce Dallas Howard) is a very different corporate woman and not an archeologist like the original film. So they are very different but at the end of the day, she is still a strong character and not just there to be eye candy.

Jurassic World is an amazing film, one everyone should see. (★★★ [out of 4 ‘s]| A)
